Course Description and Purpose:
The course investigates the institutional framework of primarily Greek social security system in dialectical approach to both the general theory of the function of the welfare state and with major international and – most importantly – European social security institutions. The emphasis, however, is given to the current settings of the social security law in Greece, with which are organized and operated at national level individual social security systems – including the special legal regime governing the retirement of civil servants – health and social welfare which are the basic mechanisms of social policy.

Learning objectives:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
(a) Describe the structure and function of Greek social security system.
(b) Understand the institutional and economic operation of social security.
(c) Distinguish the social security of the family concepts of private insurance and social assistance.
(d) Understand the distinction between harmonization and coordination of social security schemes of the Member States of the European Union.
(e) To know the fundamental principles governing the law of health and social assistance.

Rating:
A written examination at the end of the semester (100%)
