Art in Social Work

This course examines the theoretical basis of art and expressive arts therapies in the field of social work. Art and expressive – creative activities are used with individuals, families and groupsin a variety of settings: psychiatric hospitals, day treatment programs, in social work and community mental health services.

The art can be a methodological approach for personal development, therapy and social integration of people. Throughout the course, special emphasis will be given to the exploration of basic types of therapy, such as psychodrama, drama therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, poetry therapy and the expressive/ creative writing. A variety of teaching methods (:lectures,projects,experiential exercises) are used in order to support independent learning and deepening theoretical knowledge.

-Introduction and historical overview

-Arts in the field of mental health

-Psychodrama and sociodrama: theoretical approaches, methods, techniques

-Dramatherapy: theoretical foundation, healing process and applications

-Playback theatre

-Theatre/drama in education

-The theatre of the oppressed ( A. Boal )

-Art therapy: theoretical approaches, techniques and exercises

-The children’s play in the diagnosis and therapeutic intervention, the children’s art

-Music therapy:theoretical approachesand techniques , therapeutic work with voice

-The music in medicine (music medicine) and treatment

-Dance therapy, therapeutic movement, creative movement

-Cinema therapy, counseling and the promotion personal development

-Play therapy: theoretical approaches and applications

-Poetry therapy and bibliotherapy

-Psychoanalysis and literature

-Creative writing and expressive writing

-Fairytale, myths, imagination and other creative activities as counseling and therapeutic tools

-The art of storytelling and narrative approaches to psychotherapy

-Expressive arts therapies

Learning outcomes:

By the End of the Course, Students should be able to:

-Understand the theoretical foundations of art therapies

-Explore various ways of artistic expression

– Familiarize themselves with various expressive means and materials

-Explore the applications of art and expressive creative activities in the field of mental health

-Participate in experiential exercises and projects

-Explore the cycle of the creative process

-develop skills for personal reflection, implementing simple exercises and activities using arts

-integrate art and artistic activities in therapeutic intervention


Final Oral examination based on a written paper
